Leave a Legacy

Our ability to make grants during our early years was substantially because of several generous bequests made by the paddling community. It’s an honour to receive such founding gifts. We take our responsibility seriously in stewarding each donor’s wishes, in a way that produces genuine lasting impact across the whole of the UK.

We strongly believe that creating a connected outdoor culture is vital if we are to truly access nature in a way that is sustainable and an antidote to the pressures of daily living.

Countless studies have demonstrated water’s restorative effects. This can be achieved amongst the waterways of our cities and towns, not just in the countryside. Our work benefits not only paddlers, but swimmers, anglers and people who simply sit and stare at the water in contemplation. We want to ensure that there is accessible blue space for people everywhere.

Legacy pledges of all sizes are fundamental to helping us work in the most effective way possible. It is inter-generational work that requires sizeable and sustained investment. So please, consider leaving a legacy to the Canoe Foundation.

Please do let us know if you decide to make a bequest to the Canoe Foundation. Unrestricted gifts provide us with the greatest opportunity to direct your generosity to best effect, but please do also contact us if you wish to discuss making a bequest for a particular purpose or location.

Different types of Legacy

There are a number of different types of legacies you may wish to consider:

  1. A pecuniary legacy allows you to specify a sum of money to give.
  2.  A specific legacy enables you to leave a specific asset such as property, works of art or shares.
  3. A residuary legacy is a gift of all or part of your estate after other legacies and expenses have been paid.
  4. A reversionary legacy allows you to leave assets to the Canoe Foundation whilst giving a named person the benefit of them during their lifetime.
How To Leave Your Legacy

It’s important when you include a gift to the Canoe Foundation in your Will, that you use a specific title and wording so that there is no confusion as to your intended recipient. Please therefore use, or advise your solicitor to use:

‘The Canoe Foundation’

The Canoe Foundation is a registered charity (charity number 1121456). It is a company limited by guarantee registered in England and Wales (company number 06194565)

Address: National Water Sports Centre, Adbolton Lane, Holme Pierrepont, Nottinghamshire NG12 2LU

We also hope that the following example wording is helpful:

  • PECUNIARY LEGACY (a cash sum)

I give [insert amount] to The Canoe Foundation (charity number 1121456), to be applied absolutely for its general purposes and I declare that the receipt of the treasurer or other proper officer for the time being shall be a sufficient discharge to my executors.

  • RESIDUARY LEGACY (a share of your estate)

I give [insert percentage] of my residuary estate to The Canoe Foundation (charity number 1121456), to be applied absolutely for its general purposes and I declare that the receipt of the treasurer or other proper officer for the time being shall be a sufficient discharge to my executors.

We recommend that you speak to a solicitor for personal and confidential up-to-date advice tailored to your needs. They will ensure your intentions are clearly expressed and legally valid and will be able to advise you on any tax benefits in relation to your gift. You can search a list of solicitors via the Law Society.

Thank you so much.
