Canoe Foundation awards £12,500 to Paddle Sport Projects in Southwest England

Welcome to the latest installment in our mini-series of regional funding articles! Today we’ll be looking at Canoe Foundation funding in southwest England.

The Canoe Foundation is thrilled to announce its recent funding of two impactful projects in the southwest England region. With total funding of £12,500, these initiatives promise to enhance water access for paddlers, promote sustainability and create lasting positive change for all water users.

Avon Navigation Trust (ANT): Paving the Way at Strensham Lock

Project: Strensham Lock Portage Grant: £7,500

The Avon Navigation Trust (ANT) is embarking on an ambitious endeavour to improve access along the 47-mile Navigable River Avon, stretching from Stratford upon Avon to Tewkesbury. At the heart of this effort lies the impassable Strensham weir, a challenge that has hindered paddlers for too long. Here’s how the project aims to overcome it:

  1. Creating a Portage: ANT will construct a purpose-built portage at Strensham Lock. This strategic intervention will allow canoeists, kayakers and paddleboarders to bypass the tricky weir safely.
  2. Safer Passage: By providing a designated route, the portage will ensure that paddlers can navigate the lock area without risk. Safety is paramount, and this project delivers just that.
  3. Water Access and Sustainability: The portage will open up new possibilities for water enthusiasts, encouraging exploration and fostering a deeper connection with nature. It will also contribute to the long-term health of the river ecosystem.
  4. Community Impact: Local paddlers will benefit immensely from this transformative project. ANT’s commitment to enhancing waterway access aligns perfectly with the Canoe Foundation’s vision.

Ross On Wye Rowing Club: Navigating New Horizons

Project: Ramp/Slide and Steps Enhancement Grant: £5,000

Ross on Wye Rowing Club has received a well-deserved boost from the Canoe Foundation. Their visionary project aims to transform access to the Rowing Club, benefiting not only rowers but also canoeists, kayakers and paddleboarders participating in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and other visitors. Here’s what’s in store:

  1. Ramp/Slide: A sleek and efficient ramp/slide will be installed, allowing smooth and safe launching and landing for canoes. Say goodbye to cumbersome manoeuvres and hello to effortless water entry!
  2. Steel Steps with Handrail: The addition of sturdy steel steps, complete with a handrail, will ensure easy access from the Presidents’ lawn. This thoughtful design will cater to paddlers of all abilities, including those with physical limitations.
  3. Space Optimisation: By freeing up valuable space, the project will create a harmonious environment where water users and other visitors can coexist seamlessly.
  4. Environmental Impact Reduction: The Canoe Foundation recognises the importance of preserving our waterways. This project aligns with our mission to minimise environmental impact while maximising recreational opportunities.

Ross on Wye Rowing Club estimates that approximately 3,000 paddlers will benefit annually from these enhancements. We applaud their commitment to inclusivity, accessibility, and sustainable waterway use!
