Drumroll please! We’re happy to announce that thanks to a £5,000 donation from us here the Canoe Foundation, completion of major repairs to the slipway near Huish Bridge have enabled canoeists, kayakers and paddle boarders to more easily access the river at this lovely location. The work has also allowed paddlers to enjoy the non-tidal River Parrett and its tributaries (the rivers Yeo and Isle), which cross the breathtaking Somerset Levels and Moors.
Langport Town Council was supported by many important local stakeholders in its vision to see the slipway repaired. Residents, businesses, the neighbouring parish, South Somerset District Council, the existing users of the river and the Inland Waterways Association all lent their voices to this important renovation. The work complemented other improvements to the local area and has thus increased the amount of boaters visiting the river.
The car park at Huish Bridge, which is adjacent to the slipway, will be really helpful with the transfer of canoes, kayaks and stand up paddleboards to and from the river. It will also help those with limited mobility to access the water.
A handy canoe trail for the River Parrett is now available on the Go Paddling website.
Another wonderful access improvement project done and dusted! If you know of a similar project that could use a little help from the Canoe Foundation, you’re in luck. Our current funding window closes on the evening of 11 April. Find out more here.
